Greenpeace Japan's Toru Suzuki and colleague Junichi Sato begin trial in Aomori on Monday following their exposure of an embezzlement scandal inside the taxpayer-funded whaling industry. Greenpeace has gifted two of these statues to the people of Aomori and its court to mark the February 15 opening of trial against the two activists. The trial has become a landmark for Japan's legal system, after a recent opinion by the United Nations Human Rights Council's Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found that authorities have breached both the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political rights, in the treatment of Sato and Suzuki.
