547 imagesCommon Riding is an annual event celebrated in Scottish Border towns to commemorate the times of the past when local men risked their lives in order to protect their town, it's land and it's people. Celebrated every summer the festivities continue stronger than ever, but escaping the influx of tourism which occurs elsewhere. The festivals are still very much for the local people, helping reinforce their sense of community, it's value and it's heritage. 'Ride Outs' of horsemen and women take place in the weeks preceding the festival climax, and on the main day itself, with the riders visiting the outlaying hills and fields, checking on the town's borders, checking that they are intact. Songs are sung, commemorating the roles played by the towns and their people in battles from history.
