Prince (brother of Japanese Emperor) and Princesss Hitachi meet guests during a cocktail party following the awards ceremony of the 2006 Praemium Imperiale art awards, in the Meiji-Jingu Kinenkan hall, Tokyo, Japan, on Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2006. The five laureates in 2006 were internationally renowned Japanese artist Kusama Yayoi, French sculptor Christian Boltanski, German architect Frei Otto, American musician Steve Reich, and Russian dancer ballerina Maya Plisetskaya. All receive an honorarium of 15 million Yen, and a medal. The Japan Art Association, giver of the awards, is the oldest cultural foundation in Japan, established in 1887. The laureates are chosen each year by an international jury, from a list of nominees put forward by advisors. The awards are held annually in Tokyo in the presence of Prince and Princess Hitachi.
