Three trainee geisha, known as 'maiko' until they make their debut appearance, who have been hired and are being trained by the local authorities, undergo their dance and shamisen playing practice, in Shimoda, Japan, on Wednesday 14th December 2011. .The three geisha are Awagiku (in white/silver kimono), Rinka (black kimono), Iroha (pink kimono). Their teachers are Nami (green kimono), Hanamaru (geisha in purple kimono) and their teacher of shamisen musical instrument is Chikako (wearing pink kimono, gold glasses)..The three trainee geisha were selected after applying for the positions which were advertised by Shimoda city council via the 'Hello Work' employment office. The Shimoda city council hope to keep the geisha tradition alive within their town by the appointment of the girls, and the girls will undertake geisha duties at local festivals and for tour groups and tourists.
