200502 Kiribati Atoll, King Tides... (35/94)

Kamatie Kainti-Kuaba, of Betio village, looks for and collects shell fish for his family to eat on Red Beach (so called because of the amount of American soldiers who lost their lives and spilled their blood,in a fierce battle with the Japanese occupiers of the island in WW2), on the island of Kiribati in the South Pacific. The islands, and their way of life, are endangered by rising sea water levels which are eroding the fragile atoll, home to approximately 92,000 people.
