200502 Kiribati Atoll, King Tides... (20/94)

A young girl living next to the sea in Buota village, on the South Pacific island of Kiribati, watches the sea water during a "king tide" wash over a wall built by her family to protect their land from erosion by the encroaching sea.The islands, and their way of life, is endangered by rising sea water levels which are eroding the fragile atoll, home to approximately 92,000 people.
