Eight years after the country declared its independence from the Soviet Union, in 1991, a picture of Lenin still looks over a street in the city of Osh. The city was once one of the great cities of the Silk Road and of Central Asia, and is the second biggest city in the country, situated in the unstable Ferghana valley which is now becoming a hotbed if Islamic Fundamentalism.
